Dirty Dick's
  history

The elephant, a traditional style pub on two floors, now part of a modern development, has had a chequered history.

It originally dated from before the great fire of London of 1666 and was then called the Elephant and Castle. Later the 18th century artist, Hogarth had rooms above, before he became famous. The building he knew was demolished in 1826 and the pub rebuilt as the Old Elephant.

It was rebuilt again in 1914 and was one of a umber of pubs chosen to represent the "new" style of mock antique then becoming popular and being among the trendsetters for the many pubs built in the 1920's and 30's that harked back to the old- world Tudor country cottage style.

This incarnation, however, did not survive the last rebuilding. It became a Finch's house in 1974 and was transferred to young's in 1991.
